Can a dependent with an ITIN qualify for the Child Tax Credit?
✅ Child Tax Credit (CTC) – SSN Requirement
According to the IRS:
“You may not claim the child tax credit for a child with an ITIN.”
To qualify for the Child Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC):
- The child MUST have a Social Security Number (SSN)
- The SSN must be:
- Valid for employment
- Issued before the due date of the tax return (including extensions)
If the child only has an:
- ❌ ITIN
- ❌ ATIN
They are NOT a qualifying child for CTC
💡 What Can You Claim Instead?
If your dependent has an ITIN, you may still claim:
👉 Credit for Other Dependents (ODC)
- Worth up to $500
- Non-refundable
- Dependent CAN have an ITIN
IRS confirms:
If your child has an ATIN or an ITIN, your child may qualify you for the Credit for Other Dependents.
Requirements:
- Must be your dependent
- U.S. citizen / resident alien
- Has:
- SSN OR
- ITIN OR
- ATIN
