Can a dependent with an ITIN qualify for the Child Tax Credit?

✅ Child Tax Credit (CTC) – SSN Requirement

According to the IRS:

“You may not claim the child tax credit for a child with an ITIN.”

To qualify for the Child Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC):

  • The child MUST have a Social Security Number (SSN)
  • The SSN must be:
    • Valid for employment
    • Issued before the due date of the tax return (including extensions)

If the child only has an:

  • ❌ ITIN
  • ❌ ATIN

They are NOT a qualifying child for CTC


💡 What Can You Claim Instead?

If your dependent has an ITIN, you may still claim:

👉 Credit for Other Dependents (ODC)

  • Worth up to $500
  • Non-refundable
  • Dependent CAN have an ITIN

IRS confirms:

If your child has an ATIN or an ITIN, your child may qualify you for the Credit for Other Dependents.

Requirements:

  • Must be your dependent
  • U.S. citizen / resident alien
  • Has:
    • SSN OR
    • ITIN OR
    • ATIN
